Personal Statement

Personal Statement

In 2015, I enthusiastically joined the faculty at Adelphi University School of Social Work. I am a clinical social worker with expertise in mental and neurological disorders.

My research includes both intervention and implementation studies that will optimize care services, clinical interventions and supportive environments for older adults with mental and neurological disorders living in the community, as well as professional development and training projects to prepare the interprofessional clinical workforce to better meet the needs of older adults and their families.

I am currently the Co-Director, along with Dr. Barbara Silverstone, of a 36-hour continuing education program entitled Social Work Practice Fellows. SWPF is a premier tuition-based professional development program for MSW social work supervisors of direct practice from a wide range of community-based organizations serving clients across the life course. It is currently delivered through partnerships with Adelphi University, the University of Connecticut, and Syracuse University.

I recently concluded a grant-funded project, supported by the John A. Hartford Foundation, to demonstrate the effectiveness and acceptability of a professional development initiative called Supervisory Leaders in Aging (www.socialworkers.org/sla). This was a three-year study that brought the program into four states through chapters of the National Association of Social Workers. Read more on this project here:

I am the former National Director of Social Services for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, where I trained and supervised a team of social work clinicians, designed and managed service programs, and worked closely with program innovators from around the United States. I have also worked in an Elder Protective Services and Elder at Risk program, conducting forensic investigations and extensive interventions on behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

I hold clinical social work licensure in New York and Massachusetts, as well as an NASW certification in advanced gerontological clinical social work. I earned my doctorate at Columbia University School of Social Work and held an NIMH-funded postdoctoral research fellowship at the Institute for Geriatric Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College.

Since joining the prestigious social work faculty at Adelphi University, I have been teaching courses on social work practice and gerontological practice. I designed a new course as well for social work graduate students to learn all about dementia and how to provide the best care and service for this growing and vulnerable population. I have also designed a new interdisciplinary undergraduate course called Health, Mental Health, and Aging.

In my latest work, I am serving as the Faculty Director of the Center for Nonprofit Leadership, where our goal is to assist nonprofits in fulfilling their important missions.  Please read more here: https://www.adelphi.edu/nonprofit/
