Personal Statement

Nurturing the imagination, a human capacity central to our individual and communal well-being, is the current focus of my teaching and research. Specifially, I am researching the work and influence of Deirdre Hurst du Prey and the history of Adelphi's own Children's Centre for the Creative Arts in the context of the history of arts and progressive education.

Creative Scholarship

"Teaching & Learning with Long Island's Native Peoples". In March 2005 the Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum organized and hosted its first professional development workshop for elementary school educators. The workshop was funded by the President's Grant for Student Research in Diversity, Teachers College, Columbia University. A portion of the grant funded the filming of the workshop. In March 2006 I completed editing the DVD of this film, which can be used for professional development in the areas of diversity & multicultural education, Native Studies, Long Island history and social justice. (The film will by copyrighted as property of the Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum.)Karola Ritter was the cinematographer of the film. The Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center & Museum. Grants

Faculty Development Grant, Adelphi University, 2006-2007. The $5000 grant was used to create a professional development workshop for Adelphi students, faculty and alumni. The workshop was held at the Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum on October 13, 2007. The purpose was to examine an authentic model for teacher education that centers indigenous peoples' perspectives and respects them as the generators of their own educational discourses regarding their culture, history and current issues.

President's Grant for Student Research in Diversity, Committee for Community and Diversity (CCD)at Teachers College, Columbia University. 2004 recipient of $3000. grant awarded to initiate an educational partnership with members of the Shinnecock Nation. Funding enabled the co-creation of a professional development workshop for in-service Suffolk County teachers hosted by the Shinnecock Nation Cultural Center and Museum, March 3, 2005 and the creation of a DVD: Teaching and Learning with Long Island's Native Peoples.
