Personal Statement

According to bell hooks (1994), "the classroom remains the most radical space of possibility in the academy" (from Teaching to transgress: Education as the practice of freedom, p12). This is an important recognition of the role of education in transforming our students and ourselves into critical thinkers and doers in bringing about changes that reflect the ideals of social and economic justice. Ultimately, I hope that my students leave the classroom with the critical understanding that we construct and are constructed by knowledge.

I design each class session with the aim of providing students the opportunity to synthesize the material, through lectures and discussion. Further, I strive to create an environment for interaction, where students are able to ask questions, challenge and clarify their thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Indeed, I do this because I do not believe that students come to class as empty, open vessels. As such, the teaching process requires the teacher to deal with the ambiguities and contradictions that students deal with as they incorporate new materials into their understanding.

My teaching interests are Social Gerontology, Research Methods, Statistics and Data Analysis, Diversity and Oppression.

Research Interests

The Well-being of Caregivers of Frail Older Adults; Meaning in Later Life; Successful and Productive Aging; Long-term Care Issues of Frail Older Adults.

International Experience

I was a visiting scholar with the National University of Singapore in 2010 and with the Asia Research Institute in 2017. In 2010, I undertook research on the implementation of the Maintenance of Parents Act of 1995 and published three peer reviewed journal articles on that topic. I collaborated with a colleague at the University in a research study on informal caregivers and have submitted two manuscripts for review. In 2017 I conducted archival research on political discourses on aging/old age and also participated as a mentor in an international forum for graduate students. In 2015 I was invited under the Social and Health Manpower Development Programme for Intermediate Long Term Care [SHMDP-ILTC] sector as a Visiting Expert to deliver presentations, trainings, and workshops to social workers in who worked in homeibased, community-based, and hospital eldercare services for older adults and their families. This was under the auspices of the Agency for Integrated Care, Singapore, which planned and coordinated the delivery of elder services in Singapore.
