Research Interests

I am broadly interested in the study of population variation, evolutionary processes, and organismal biology using the tools of molecular genetics.

My current projects involve lactoferrin, a mammalian protein involved in iron uptake, defense against pathogens, and regulation of inflammatory responses. I am working to characterize the distribution of variants of lactoferrin in human populations, and to determine whether selection has played a role in shaping this distribution. I am also working to describe the patterns of change in the lactoferrin gene that has occurred during the evolution of the mammals.

In past research I have studied the evolution and organismal biology of various insects, including swallowtail butterflies, malaria mosquitoes, and fruit flies.
