Personal Statement

I choose to teach management because I believe that business literacy has become fundamentally necessary for men and women to participate in society in a meaningful way.

We know that contemporary organizations act on people's lives in dynamic and complex ways. Organizations can have tremendously adverse effects on people's well-being; organizations also have a tremendous capacity to support people's development and growth. I believe the difference between these two extremes lies, to a great extent, in education and awareness of the considerable personal choice available to people in professional settings.

Providing people with the awareness they need to make effective choices in the workplace drives my teaching. In every course that I teach, I provide students with tools and strategies to understand the complexities of organizational life, and to more effectively choose the ways they will respond to those demands.

Research Interests

My research focuses on tacit (unreflective) dimensions of organizational life. In particular, I am curious to understand:
(1) how individuals, corporations, professions, and industries operate under the influence of complex, unrecognized patterns of behaviour; and
(2) how managers can become aware of such patterns in order to more effectively lead their corporations and serve their stakeholders.

At present, I have two streams of research contributing to scholars' interest in the tacit dimension of organizational life: how workplace practitioners detect patterns in complex situations; and the tacit influence of masculinity and femininity in emerging professions.

I've published both conceptual and empirical aspects of this work in Systems Research and Behavioral Science, the International Journal of Project Management, Project Management Journal, PM Network, and several conference profeedings.
