Personal StatementThe majority of my course work is to educate pre-professionals. Therefore I try to model good teaching practices and provide students with practical experiences in the classroom. I believe that this focus on experiential learning and skills based models will provide pre- service teachers with the opportunity to rehearse and practice relevant skills in simulated settings. If we are to measure student achievement we should measure the student’s ability to perform the health related skills and behaviors they have learned in my classroom. Health and Wellness Education is a complex area that is influenced by a myriad of overlapping biological psychological and social factors. Due to the multi-faceted nature of Health and Wellness education teacher candidates need to be trained to effectively deliver health related skills and content to their prospective students. In addition, another focus of my philosophy is to encourage my students to find and nurture their natural talents and utilize them in the classroom for optimal teacher effectiveness. By modeling varied teaching techniques and involving students in hands-on, experiential learning, I am hopeful that my students will be well versed and rehearsed for their own classroom experiences.
Teaching Specializations / InterestsI have had several years experience in pedagogy, teaching methods and applying behavior change models to the curriculum. In addition to those, my current interests include developing "Wellness" oriented curriculum for community based schools. It is my intention to assist area school districts with their adoption of the newly mandated Federal Wellness Policy.
Research InterestsAdolescent sexual behaviors and attitudes, childhood obesity and fitness. Educating parents and coaches of the virtue of maintaining the "fun" and controlling the "must win" sentiment often found in youth sport involvement today.
