Personal StatementElie Wiesel once said that education should lead people to think higher and feel deeper. I believe in active and engaged learning in the context of high standards. Across all levels, from undergraduate to doctoral, I seek to promote openness, risk taking, critical thinking and analysis in an environment that is challenging, and supportive
Research Interests"Power", "intimacy", "entitlement", "relationships", "the psychology of justice"... These are key words that describe my past and present research interests.
My early work focused on the psychology of justice. Shortly after joining the Derner faculty, I extended this work to look at issues of justice and fairness in the context of adult relationships. I focused specifically on dual-career couples, both heterosexual and gay and lesbian. Initially, the emphasis was on power, particularly the extent to which power is shared and its relationship to the well-being of the partners. In the course of this research, I became interested in the ways in which a healthy sense of entitlement contributes to power sharing. From this research, together with Derner students Lavita Nadkarni and Judy Malone, I developed a measure integrating both clinical and psychological views of entitlement. This empirically supported measure remains unique in integrating the clinical with the social and continues in my work today.
Through my work with several other Derner students, I began to focus on the link between how power is shared and the level of relationship intimacy that is achieved as well as identifying the predictors of intimacy across relationship types. Continuing the focus on better understanding the conditions under which relationships are most beneficial to both partners, I recently began looking at the importance of intimacy expectations. Here the findings of a longitudinal study with Ashley Novak showed the importance of the gap between intimacy expectations and perceptions of achieved intimacy.
Currently, I am exploring these topics in broader contexts ... expectations and conceptions of intimacy across cultures, power from the perspective of those who are advantaged as compared to those who are not, and justice in the context of multi-racial relationships
