Personal Statement

Personal Statement

My primary areas of focus are social work with groups, international social work, organizational and community practice. I have been involved with a range of social work fields, settings and populations, both locally and internationally, including youth programs, disaster response, field education and training, social work education and regulation, housing, older adults, and child welfare.

I am committed to collaborative, participatory research and evaluation, seeking to engage practitioners, students and consumers in examining outcomes and planning new interventions. My research generally incorporates both qualitative and quantitative methods, and I am considered an expert in focus group research. My publications include 5 books, with 1 in contract (the Routledge International Handbook on Social Work with Groups). Alone and with others, I have authored over 30 journal articles, book chapters and reviews. I am an editorial board member of Groupwork and the Journal of Social Work with Groups, as well as a reviewer for a number of peer reviewed journals.

I was selected the 2022 International Honoree of the International Association for Social Work with Groups (IASWG).

Currently, I am the inaugural CSWE Liaision to the Fulbright Commission, chair of the CSWE Group Work Track, co-chair of the IASWG's Commission on Education in Social Work with Groups, and serve on the Boards of the Kendall Institute of International Social Work, the IASWG, and Catholic Charities Brooklyn/Queens Neighborhood Services (where I was a practicing social worker and administrator for over 15 years). I am the immediate past chair of the CSWE Commission on Global Social Work Education and board member of CSWE, and former chair of the New York State Social Work Board.

I am a Fulbright Scholar, and have taught and collaborated with programs in Australia, Bangladesh, Barbados, China, Europe, India, Israel, Lithuania, Malaysia, Namibia, South Africa, Spain and Vietnam.
