Offered through a partnership between Adelphi\u2019s College of Education and Health Sciences and the New York City Department of Education (NYC DOE), the Urban Teacher Residency (UTR) is a graduate program where you will earn a Master of Arts degree in education and gain New York state teacher certification\u00a0in\u00a0science or math\u00a0while centering your learning on the needs of NYC DOE students, specifically Black, Indigenous and students of color.\u00a0You\u2019ll use a school-based approach that puts student learning at the center of your professional development.<\/p>\n
Designed to immerse residents in the teaching experience, this residency program supports upcoming educators who will join a school community five days a week for the full school year.<\/p>\n
As a resident, you will participate in a community of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) teachers committed to collaborating on interdisciplinary curriculum planning and instruction.\u00a0You’ll engage in coursework and professional learning aimed at supporting your individual growth, cultural competence and understanding of the systemic inequities currently and historically embedded in the education system.<\/p>\n
As you work during the day and attend school at night, your salary will be paid for your first year by the NYC DOE\u2014and you\u2019ll get health benefits.\u00a0In 2020\u20132021, first-year teacher apprentices in this program received $22,500. After year one, you\u2019ll be eligible for a higher salary step ($60,000-plus) than traditional first-year teachers as a full-time teacher of record at a NYC DOE school.<\/p>\n
