{"id":1669,"date":"2026-09-17T12:42:30","date_gmt":"2026-09-17T16:42:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/research\/undergraduate\/exploration-activities\/mission-adelphi\/flight-experiment-competition-2\/"},"modified":"2026-09-22T10:45:03","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T14:45:03","slug":"mission-patch-competition","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/research\/undergraduate\/exploration-activities\/mission-adelphi\/mission-patch-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Mission Patch Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>As part of Adelphi\u2019s participation in the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program, students aren\u2019t just designing real microgravity experiments for launch to the International Space Station\u2014we\u2019re also running a Mission Patch Art and Design Competition to bring a different kind of creativity to this journey. <strong>The winning patch designs will fly to space aboard the same mission as our student experiment, then return to Earth.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This will be a community effort: Two patches will fly into space\u2014one selected from submissions by Adelphi University and local high school students, and one designed by K-8 students from our local community.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is a Mission Patch?<\/h2>\n<p><span>Every space mission\u2014from Mercury and Apollo to the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station\u2014has carried a mission patch: a small emblem that tells the story of the people and purpose behind the flight and captures its excitement. Adelphi will now add a page to that history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>A mission patch is a 3.5&#8243; x 3.5&#8243; square design that represents what the Mission Adelphi journey means to you and to Adelphi as a community looking to the stars. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/ssep.ncesse.org\/communities\/mission-patches\/mission-patches-on-mission-21-to-the-international-space-station\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>See last year\u2019s patches<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span><strong>No science background required.<\/strong> This competition is open to art, design, and creative minds of all ages\u2014not just STEM.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span><strong>Be part of something historic.<\/strong> Mission patches have flown on every human spaceflight since Project Mercury in the 1960s. Yours could be next.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span><strong>Represent your community.<\/strong> Your design becomes part of the visual story of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/research\/undergraduate\/exploration-activities\/mission-adelphi\/\">Mission Adelphi<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Mission Patch Contest Details<\/h2>\n<p><span>New York school administrators or faculty members in <strong>Nassau<\/strong>, <strong>Queens<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>,<\/strong> or <strong>Suffolk<\/strong> counties who would like students to<\/span><span> participate in the Mission Patch Competition should contact Dr. Kevin Liang.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One winning design will be selected from each track, and both patches will fly together to the International Space Station as part of Adelphi\u2019s SSEP payload.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Adelphi University and High School Track<\/h3>\n<p><span>Open to undergraduates across every school and major, student organizations and creative clubs, plus high schoolers in our community. You don&#8217;t need to be on the experiment team to help tell our story\u2014if you can design, sketch, paint or create digitally, you belong in this competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>K-8 Student Track<\/h3>\n<p><span>Open to elementary students at our local partner schools.
