President’s Newsletter

Each month, I share stories of how Adelphi continues growing, leading and making a difference through our mission to transform lives. I invite you to see the ways our University, students, faculty, staff and alumni are contributing to our communities and advancing their professions and fields of study. I am thrilled to share these stories with you and welcome you to be part of our University community.

At Adelphi, we are deeply committed to advancing change for the greater good. I’m proud to highlight our innovative community members who are exploring new approaches to sustainability, stewardship and mentoring for student and faculty success.

Aaren Freeman, PhD, who teaches environmental sustainability to our biology students, also conducts important work outside the classroom that restores and preserves our local environment. On our campus, Adelphi’s nationally acclaimed student Mentoring Program continues to thrive; its founding director shares details of our winning model this month. And our new Faculty Mentoring Academy is one way we’ve enhanced support for our colleagues. Finally, I’m pleased to recognize the advisory board of one of our schools and its direct impact on student success.

I look forward to welcoming our community back to Adelphi at the end of this month. Until then, wishing you a wonderful rest of summer.

All the best,
Chris

These boards—and their dedicated members—make critical contributions to advancing student success. For example, our Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology Advisory Board launched its first-ever fundraising initiative 10 years ago to help support PhD students from diverse backgrounds. That scholarship fund has since grown to $1.25 million.

Adelphi is making local, national and global news.

  • President Christine Riordan was a featured guest on The Sydcast, discussing leadership and her “Path to University Leadership” with Syd Finkelstein from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
  • In Psychology Today, a feature on the connection between mental health and the global financial crisis is covered by Karolina Lempert, PhD, assistant professor of psychology.
  • Consumer Reports article explains the pros and cons of app-based home hearing tests, featuring the expertise of Yula Serpanos, PhD, professor in Adelphi’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. The story also appeared on Yahoo News.
  • In a Healthline article, Deborah Serani, PsyD, explains why people are hesitant about returning to pre-pandemic life and provides tips for regaining some normalcy. Dr. Serani is a senior adjunct professor of psychology at Adelphi.

You cannot train someone to be antiracist and inclusive. You must educate…The shift in language and sharing of goals has helped move our campus past the pushback stage.

Kristen Capezza, MBA ’12 Vice President of Enrollment Management and University Communications
In a special report of The Chronicle of Higher Education, “Diverse Leadership for a New Era.” Adelphi was featured in a case study.
