Handling of Materials

To help preserve the unique, rare and sometimes fragile materials held by UASC we ask researchers to observe the following special handling requirements and reading room rules:

  • Please handle all materials with care. If you are concerned about the fragility of material or unsure about how to handle an item please request assistance from the reading room attendant.
  • Please ensure your hands are clean and dry before handling UASC materials.
  • Artwork may only be handled by the reading room attendant.
  • No food or drink of any kind is permitted in the Reading Room.
  • All personal belongings, except those necessary for research (such as laptops and cell phones), should be placed in the reading room lockers. This includes backpacks, large handbags, coats, binders, laptop cases and bound notebooks. Pencils and note paper will be provided upon request.
  • Pencils are the only permitted writing implements. Pens, markers, highlighters, etc. are prohibited and should be left in reading room lockers.
  • Researchers should work with one item at a time. Special permission for working with two items at once (e.g. for comparison purposes) can be requested.
  • Researchers should work with one manuscript box and one folder at a time. Please take care to maintain the documents and folders in their original order.
  • Please turn off or silence your cell phone while using the reading room.
  • When consulting books please utilize book cradles. The reading room attendant will provide the appropriate cradle and necessary assistance.
  • You may be asked to wear gloves (which will be provided) when handling photographs.
