The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is an organization dedicated to supporting students who are pursuing careers in the fields of speech-language pathology and audiology by providing resources, networking opportunities and educational support to students and raising awareness about the challenges facing the Deaf and hard of hearing community.

One Adelphi professor's fight to bring change to her field.

When Adelya Urmanche, PhD ’22, was looking for a school for her doctoral studies, she wanted to stay close to home. At the age of 9, Urmanche emigrated from Kazan, Russia, with her mother, landing first in Brooklyn, New York, and then in New Jersey. Home had moved around enough for her already. She wanted a strong psychology program that offered both research and clinical experience, but she also wanted to stay near her mother.

Adelphi’s communication sciences and disorders program provides a broad range of treatment, care and support to people of myriad linguistic backgrounds—from toddlers to seniors. We are privileged to work with diverse communities across Long Island.

In Fall 2021, the National Black Association for Speech-Language and Hearing (NBASLH, pronounced “in bahz la" or /nbazle/) welcomed Adelphi University as its newest affiliate.

Children, teens and adults in neighboring communities depend on the therapists in the Hy Weinberg Center for Communication Disorders for speech-language and hearing evaluations and interventions. On March 2, 2020, the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of its new Center for Research. But students and faculty eager to use the center would have to wait because the campus closed for the remainder of the spring semester due to COVID-19.

Four Adelphi University graduate degree programs have landed on the U.S. News & World Report's Best Graduate Schools list for 2021.

In January 2020, seven-third year audiology doctoral students and two clinical professors, Dr. Ianthe Dunn-Murad and Dr. Rose Valvezan had the unique and humbling opportunity to travel with the Starkey Hearing Foundation to El Salvador, Central America to provide hearing services to over 1,200 individuals with hearing loss and hearing impairments.

Our faculty, students, leadership and staff are active participants in the greater Long Island region, rolling up their sleeves and offering their expertise to solve problems, provide services and improve the lives of our neighbors (including oysters). Another benefit? Valuable, hands-on experience for our students.
