{"id":919,"date":"2022-03-09T10:15:57","date_gmt":"2022-03-09T15:15:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/?page_id=919"},"modified":"2026-04-23T14:44:05","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T18:44:05","slug":"j-1-insurance-requirements","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/inviting-scholars\/j-1-insurance-requirements\/","title":{"rendered":"J-1 Insurance Requirements"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>All participants\u2014and their dependents\u2014must maintain qualifying insurance for the entire duration of their program.<\/p>\n<h2>Who Must Be Covered<\/h2>\n<p>All J-1 Exchange Visitors and their dependents (spouses and\/or minor children) must have insurance that covers sickness and accidents while participating in the program.<\/p>\n<h2>Minimum Health Insurance Benefits<\/h2>\n<p>Your insurance plan must meet the following federal minimum benefits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Medical Benefits:<\/strong> At least $100,000 per accident or illness<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Repatriation of Remains:<\/strong> At least $25,000<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Medical Evacuation:<\/strong> At least $50,000 to home country<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Deductible:<\/strong> No more than $500 per accident or illness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Insurance Provider Ratings<\/h2>\n<p>Must meet one of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A.M. Best:<\/strong> rating of A- or above<\/li>\n<li><strong>Insurance Solvency International (ISI):<\/strong> rating of A-I or above<\/li>\n<li><strong>Standard &amp; Poor\u2019s:<\/strong> rating of A- or above<\/li>\n<li><strong>Weiss Research:<\/strong> rating of B+ or above<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>J-1 Students<\/h2>\n<p>Participants and their dependents must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enrollment in the Adelphi University health insurance plan is required unless a waiver is approved<\/li>\n<li>Insurance fees are billed directly to the student\u2019s tuition account<\/li>\n<li>Students with comparable coverage may request a waiver<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Waiver Requirements<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Must be submitted prior to the posted deadline<\/li>\n<li>Must meet all federal (ACA) and New York State insurance requirements<\/li>\n<li>Must meet all J-1 minimum coverage requirements listed above<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/health\/insurance-information-and-requirements\/\">health insurance plan details or waiver information<\/a>.
