{"id":1504,"date":"2022-05-13T12:09:10","date_gmt":"2022-05-13T16:09:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/employment-for-international-students\/opt\/pre-completion-2\/"},"modified":"2026-02-03T11:05:32","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T16:05:32","slug":"post-completion-opt","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.adelphi.edu\/international-services\/employment\/post-completion-opt\/","title":{"rendered":"Post-Completion OPT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While a Designated School Official (DSO) recommends OPT in SEVIS, it is the student who must apply for the work permit with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). If the OPT is approved, USCIS will issue an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). The student must not begin working before the start date on the EAD.<\/p>\n<h2>Eligibility for Post-Completion OPT<\/h2>\n<p>A student is eligible for post-completion OPT if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The student has been a full-time student for one academic year with the current SEVIS ID;<\/li>\n<li>The student has completed a bachelor\u2019s, master\u2019s, or doctoral degree;<\/li>\n<li>The student has not used all optional practical training available at the current level of study;<\/li>\n<li>The student has not been authorized for 12 months or more of full-time CPT;<\/li>\n<li>The student obtains the DSO\u2019s OPT recommendation entered into the student\u2019s SEVIS record and annotated on their Form I-20;<\/li>\n<li>The student properly files a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/i-765\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization<\/a> with USCIS, in accordance with all deadlines and accompanied by the required fee and the supporting documentation as described in the form instructions.<\/li>\n<li>If you are authorized for post-completion OPT, you must work part time (at least 20 hours per week) or full time in a position directly related to your academic major.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Requesting the OPT DSO Endorsement<\/h2>\n<p>To obtain a new I-20 recommending OPT employment, necessary to file the Form I-765 with USCIS, you must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Meet all degree requirements as per your academic program requirements and obtain an official letter from your academic advisor indicating fulfillment of all requirements for the identified term.<\/li>\n<li>Select your OPT start date within the 60 days following the last day of classes as per the graduating term.<\/li>\n<li>Submit the OPT DSO Endorsement Request using the International Services Portal.<\/li>\n<li>Please be aware that you must file your Form I-765 within 30 days of the date that your DSO enters the recommendation for OPT into your SEVIS record or your OPT application will be denied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While a Designated School Official (DSO) recommends OPT in SEVIS, it is the student who must apply for the work permit with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS).
