Starting with Reflection. Working Towards Equity.

A teacher’s ability to use contextual social and cultural awareness is crucial when working with music classes of diverse student backgrounds and diverse student abilities. It seems natural that when beginning this work we would seek guidance from others, but the journey also begins with truly understanding oneself. Reflection, as a pedagogical and social justice tool, is a deliberate act that moves us beyond passive intentions. Join me as I share some lived experiences in which reflecting on positionality influences what I teach and how I engage with students, in the hopes that these ideas may find a place in your own teaching practice.
