About the Speaker

During Professor David Machlis’s long tenure of 53 years at Adelphi, he has served as Chairman of the Economics Department, Director of the University’s Urban Center and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. In the 2017-2018 academic year, he received the Teaching Excellence Award.

Professor Machlis was a member of the President’s Commission on Bi-Lingual Education and has devoted himself to being a social reformer by bringing distinguished individuals and groups to visit the sites of the Concentration Camps in Poland as a vehicle for combating hatred and intolerance. Amongst the education missions that he organized are Deans of Schools of Education and Law Schools, Commissioners and Heads of State Boards of Education, World War II Camp Liberators, Oprah Winfrey and Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel.

He was the Associate Creator of a United Nations exhibit entitled “When You Listen to a Witness You Become a Witness.” His work is based upon the belief that the Holocaust is a Universal issue and that we must learn from the past so that a more just and tolerant society evolves for the betterment of all humankind.
