Training description: The recent COVID-19 pandemic has moved many mental health professionals towards telehealth services. However, many professionals find it challenging to engage children and adolescents in telehealth sessions.

Attendees will learn how to integrate play skills into a telehealth session that can mimic the work traditionally done in a playroom. There will be a focus on specific play interventions that can be taught via telehealth to address emotions children may be experiencing due to the pandemic including anxiety, anger, and sadness.

Participants will:

  • Discover teleplay activities to support emotional dysregulation in children in a virtual setting
  • Examine the ways to integrate mindfulness-based teleplay activities into a virtual setting
  • Discuss play therapy techniques that can be used to build rapport in a virtual setting

Faculty Bio

April Duncan (LCSW, RPT-S) obtained her Bachelor’s in Arts & Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia (2006), Masters of Social Work from Saint Louis University (2012) and is a doctoral
candidate in the DSW program at the University of
Southern California. She has a private practice in St. Louis and is the Co-Owner of St. Louis Play Therapy Institute, which provides play therapy training for educational and mental health professionals. Ms. Duncan’s current focus is addressing the rising rates of suicide in Black youth due to racial trauma. Most recently, Ms. Duncan founded BMH Connect, a for-profit organization focusing on using play therapy to address suicide and racial trauma in Black youth.

Adelphi University School of Social Work is an approved provider for continuing education credits for the following:

Successful completion for the award of approved continuing education credits requires attendance at the entire training/workshop and submission of a completed evaluation form.

New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education hours. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.

Cancellation Policy

Unfortunately, we cannot provide refunds for cancellations made seven working days or fewer before the event for any reason—or for no-shows. We can provide credit towards a future workshop up to 24 hours before the event. After that, no credit will be issued.
