The play therapist must be skilled in identifying the key signs of suicide that minority youth may present in the playroom Time will be spent exploring play themes that may reflect signs of trauma, grief, or suicide and play techniques to help adequately address those issues.

Learning objectives:

  1. Identify play themes that may signal issues around self-harm in play therapy sessions
  2. Analyze play therapy interventions to support minority youth who have experienced bullying
  3. Discuss the steps for safety planning in the playroom
  4. Explain cultural considerations when supporting minority youth who are experiencing suicidality

Faculty Bio

Dr. April Duncan, DSW, LCSW, RPT-S

April Duncan (DSW, LCSW, RPT-S) obtained her Bachelor’s in Arts & Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia (2006), Masters of Social Work from Saint Louis University (2012) and Doctorate of Social Work from the University of Southern California (2021). She has a private practice in Charlotte, North Carolina, is the Co-Owner of St. Louis Play Therapy Institute and is an adjunct instructor in the online MSW program at Tulane University. Dr. April is also the founder of BMH Connect, a for-profit organization focusing on using play therapy to address suicide and racial trauma in Black youth.

Successful completion for the award of approved continuing education credits requires attendance at the entire training/workshop and submission of a completed evaluation form.

New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education hours. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. According to NYSED, in order to award social work CEs; “When you offer a multi-day or multi-part course/educational activity, the learner must complete all parts in order to earn the certificate for contact hours, in the same way that a student must complete a semester-long course to receive college credit. You may not award partial credit for a program, even a one-day program, if the learner does not complete all requirements at that time.”

Adelphi University School of Social Work: Continuing Education and Professional Development, #1786, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. Adelphi University School of Social Work: Continuing Education and Professional Development maintain responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 03/03/2022 – 03/03/2023. ACE is not an approved Continuing Education Provider in the states of New York and West Virginia unless the event is outside of West VA.
