Self-Psychology In the Ongoing Evolution of Psychoanalysis

Through this engagement, therapeutic action can result in a more effective outcome for the patient, and a greater sense of satisfaction for the analyst. The seminar will illuminate case formulations and conceptualization of the therapeutic process through examining the contribution of Kohut’s three self-object functions, the role of empathy in treating narcissistic personality disorders, Beebe & Lachmann’s three principles of salience, as well perspective about aggression.

Speakers

Estelle Shane, PhD

Estelle Shane is training/supervising analyst and on the faculty at the New Center for Psychoanalysis and Founding Member, Board Member, Training/supervising Analyst and faculty member at the Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalysis where she currently serves on the Board of Directors and chairs the Training and Supervising Analyst Committee. She is a Child, Adolescent, and Adult Analyst certified by the American Psychoanalytic Association and the International Psychoanalytic Association.

Estelle is a Founder and Founding Board Member and Founding Vice President of the International Association of Psychoanalytic Self Psychology where she has been the Board President, and currently serves as a Board member. She serves as an Adviser for the International Association of Relational Psychoanalysts and Psychotherapists. She serves on the Editorial Boards of Psychoanalytic Inquiry, and Psychoanalysis Self and Context and has published numerous articles and co-authored one book. Earlier in her career Estelle had been the founding director of the elementary school and college for teachers at the Center for Early Education in Los Angeles.

Arthur A. Gray, PhD

Arthur A. Gray, PhD, as an honorary member of the Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity (IPSS), he is faculty, supervisor, and serves on its Coordinating Committee. He is also faculty and supervisor at the Postgraduate Psychoanalytic Society’s Group Therapy Department; and teaches self psychology in the postgraduate program at Adelphi University. He is a consultant to the executive board of the International Association for Psychoanalytic Self Psychology (IAPS), a member of the Institute Committee at the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA), and is on the editorial board of Psychoanalytic Inquiry. He has consulted with self psychology groups in South Africa and in Japan, and conducts supervision online in other countries using his group supervision model. His published articles apply self psychology and subjectivity theory to individual, couples, group, and supervision. He has a special interest in how improvisation informs the therapeutic process. His latest publication is, “Sanford

Meisner, Improvisation, and the Art of Psychoanalysis” in Psychoanalytic Inquiry, 2023. In private practice in New York City, Arthur treats adults using individual, couples, and group psychoanalysis and psychotherapy.

Case Presentation

Colleen McKechnie

After growing up on Long Island, I attended the University of Vermont for my undergraduate degree in Plant Science. Following graduation, I worked at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory teaching genetics and molecular biology. While I loved science and research, it was the connection to my students that was most rewarding. In 2018, I started a new career path and earned a PsyD in School Psychology from Hofstra University.

I decided to seek advanced training and joined Adelphi University as a fellow in the Postdoctoral Psychoanalytic Program. Although it was an adjustment in the beginning, analytic thinking has shifted how I engage with my work. Today, I am learning how to listen and encourage curiosity to help patients explore their experience.
