Enabling Teachers to Create Healing Spaces in Virtual and in Actual Classrooms

Maintaining School Mental Health Services in the Midst of The COVID-19 Crisis

The Postgraduate Programs in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in the Derner School of Psychology are pleased to invite you to a free zoom workshop for school mental health practitioners.

1.5 CE credits
LMSW/LCSW, PsyD

The Covid-19 crisis has caused many trauma related anxieties and insecurities in children. The school can be a safe place that provides nurturance and restores security, foundations for learning to take place. This workshop focuses on the role that school mental health practitioners can play in enabling teachers to create healing spaces for their students in virtual classrooms now and in actual classrooms once schools reopen.

Dr. Michael O’Laughlin will clarify the components that go into making the classroom a “healing space”. He will expand upon ways to enable teachers to be deeply attuned listeners to the emotional messages conveyed through the actions as well as the words of their students. Effective learning is optimized when children feel that their emotions are understood and accepted.

Dr. Kirkland Vaughans will elaborate upon his experiences as a school psychologist in the Hempstead Public Schools where he worked actively to enable teachers to recognize and develop strategies to meet the psychological and educational needs of their students.

Registrants are encouraged to submit questions and to express their interests before and during the presentation. Ample time will be provided for interaction between audience members and the speakers.
