I decided in 1979 I wanted more than that position had to offer and I returned to Adelphi, Full-Time on a Graduate Assistantship in the School of Business. This all came about thanks to Dr. Neale Kurlander, a former professor.. I actually worked 20 hours per week for 3 professors and I received FREE tuition for my MBA. After graduation I received an offer from American Express in Manhattan. Commuting to NYC was a challenge and I therefore decided to find employment on Long Island. After working for a few years for American Express, I received an offer to work for Nassau BOCES in Westbury. I was Assistant Manager of Accounting & Insurance. After getting a promotion and working there for a few more years, I decided it was time to move on. I ended up working for the Freeport UFSD. It was there that I learned about how a school districts operates. I actually went back to school, CW Post, and received my Post Masters Degree in School Business Administration. That transfer, with the help of my BA, brought me into the prestigious Overseas Department of AT&T where I was assigned to the team responsible for the planning and development of undersea cable systems in the Asia-Pacific region. Based in Bedminster, NJ, the position required extensive travel throughout Asia, negotiating with telecom carriers from Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Australia and New Zealand. European carriers were also part of these negotiations in order to secure bandwidth for their international traffic needs. As such, it would not be uncommon to find myself holding the position of secretary to a new cable’s management committee, often involving more than twenty carriers, while also ensuring AT&T’s requirements were met. With the introduction of fiber-optic undersea cables in the mid 1980’s, I was privileged to be part of the negotiations of the first of these hi-tech systems, which connected the U.S. mainland to Hawaii, Guam and Japan. Today more than 600 undersea cable networks connect our world, together comprising the backbone of the global Internet.
