Introduces the sociolinguistic perspectives on language use and language learning. Concepts of language contact, language variation and language acquisition in adolescent education are explored, particularly as related to English language learners. (Learning Goals:CO,G)

Analyze language attitudes and societal ideologies2. understand how current language policies influence language acquisition in use in classrooms and society3. explain the characteristics of world varieties of English, dialects of English, creoles and pidgins4. use ethnographic accounts to analyze sociocultural and institutional structures5. learn some ways in which gender and cultural background influence communication 6. explain major theories of how secondary school students achieve full biliteracy
