Cross-listed with abc 242 Students will explore the musical and cultural developments associated with Hip-Hop in the United States from the early 1970s to the present. Students will gain knowledge and appreciation of rapidly-evolving musical trends that propelled these genres to international popularity to become an enduring cultural influence. (Distribution Reqs:Arts) Goals of the Course: Key learning outcomes of this course include:1. To investigate the musical characteristics, technological developments, and sociopoliticalissues associated with evolution of Hip-Hop.2. To understand the music as both impetus for and function of social awareness regardingissues of urban development, racial inequality, politics, and commercialism.3. To develop a methodology for analyzing the music in a meaningful way.24. To understand the role Hip Hop played in the development of contemporary Americanpopular music.5.
