Our Young Writers Retreat is named in honor of distinguished Adelphi graduate, Alice Hoffman '73. The author of more than a dozen novels, one book of short fiction, four books for children, and a number of feature films, Ms. Hoffman remains active as a community advocate for youth and women's issues. Ms. Hoffman serves as an adviser and mentor for the development of this project.
Among her noted works are:
- Here On Earth, an Oprah Book Club choice, a modern reworking of some of the themes of Emily Bronte's masterpiece Wuthering Heights.
- Practical Magic, a Warner Bros. feature film starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
- At Risk, a novel about a family dealing with AIDS, which can be found on the reading lists of many universities, colleges, and secondary schools.
- Local Girls, a collection of inter-related fictions about love and loss on Long Island. Ms. Hoffman donated her advance from this book to help create a breast cancer center outside of Boston.
- Her most recent books include Aquamarine and Indigo, novels for pre-teens, and The New York Times bestsellers The River King and Blue Diary. Green Angel, a post-apocalyptic fairy tale, is being published this year by Scholastic. In 2003, Doubleday published her newest novel, The Probable Future, a search for love, destiny, and the perfect rose.
Ms. Hoffman's work has been published in more than 20 languages and more than 100 foreign editions. Her novels have received mention as notable books of the year by The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, The Los Angeles Times, Library Journal, and People Magazine. She also worked as a screenwriter for nearly 20 years and is the author of the original screenplay for Independence Day, a film starring Kathleen Quinlan and Diane Weist. Hoffman's short fiction and non-fiction have appeared in The New York Times, The Boston Globe Magazine, Kenyon Review, Boulevard, Redbook, Architectural Digest, Gourmet, Premier, Self, Southwestern Review as well as the anthologies Family, Thirty-Three Things Every Girl Should Know, and Cape Cod Stories.
