StoryCorps, an independent nonprofit group, set up its recording booth at AU PAC for four days this fall, Monday, October 5 to Thursday, October 8, allowing community members to tell their own versions of the American experience.
StoryCorps' visit was designed to coincide with performances of the award-winning play Street Scene at the Olmsted Theatre. Just as StoryCorps allows people to tell their stories, Street Scene, set on the front stoop of a New York City tenement building in the summer of 1929, describes the gritty immigrant experience in Depression-era New York City.
StoryCorps began as an oral history initiative in 2003 with the main purpose of preserving American history and experience by recording interviews between family members and friends in an effort to learn more about each person's unique journey through life. The project has grown exponentially since its inception, with more than 50,000 people sharing their life experiences. Each participant walks away with a CD that documents the exchange. A second CD is then archived at the Library of Congress for future generations to listen to. Many stories are also aired on National Public Radio as part of StoryCorps' regular series.
