D. Sean Smith, DO is Physician President, Mercy Clinic-Joplin/Kansas, which is a Multi-Specialty Integrated Clinic of over 136 physicians and over 30 mid-level providers based in Joplin, Missouri. On May 22, 2011, Joplin and our St. John’s Regional Medical Center were struck by the single worst tornado since record keeping began in the 1950’s.

Dr. Smith is board certified in Emergency Medicine and also serves as the Emergency Department Medical Director, and still practices in addition to his Clinic President administrative role. He has been with St. John’s Regional Medical Center/Mercy Clinics since 2001, and held several other administrative roles prior to his current position.

Before entering medical school, Dr. Smith was an EMT-Paramedic for 12 years directing EMS systems, and had training in Incident Command System Operation, Hazardous Materials Management, and Management of the Search Function. This training became invaluable on May 22nd as he assisted with the initial Incident Command Function for St. John’s Regional Medical Center.
