Speaker Bios Gerhard Backer

Gerhard Backer is Professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Chair for Sociology and Social Policy. His key areas of research and lecturing are the welfare state and the social security system, financing social welfare, social security and the labor market, income distribution and poverty, and family policy.  He is the author of Sozialpolitik und soziale Lage in Deutschland: Ein Lehr – und Studienbuch (Social Policy and Social Legislation in Germany: A teaching and Study Book), 2 vols. (with R. Bispinck, K. Hofemann, and G. Naegele, 4th edition, 2004), he has edited Combating Poverty in Europe - The German Welfare Regime in Practice (together with Krause, P., Hanesch, W.), Aldershot 2003, and he has contributed chapters to La Exclusion social (Social Exclusion) (J. Hernandez and M. Olza, eds., 1998) and Kinder in Armut (Children in Poverty) (C. Butterwegge and D.
