Reflective functioning is an ability that is unique to human beings. It is the ability to reflect upon your own inner emotional world or that of your child's. "Reflective Parenting" uses this ability to understand your child’s thoughts, feelings, intentions, and needs. It is this understanding that allows a parent to effectively respond to the subtle, often nonverbal cues that are important in interpersonal relationships.
Healthy parent-child relationships are characterized by a parent's ability to stay reflective in the context of the confusing, emotionally charged interactions that regularly occur within every family. Being able to respond to your child’s behavior in terms of understanding the feelings and thoughts that motivate it is essential for strong parent-child bonds and secure attachments.
It is a parent's capacity for reflective functioning that allows children to develop their own ability to be self observing. With parents as guides, children make links between feelings, thoughts and behavior. It is this process that lies at the core of healthy development.
So.., If you are wondering what causes your child's actions…trying to understand your child’s feelings or are overwhelmed by how to manage your child’s behavior join us for this informative and useful talk for parents.
