The latest research on children and their eating habits clearly illustrates that portion size, food content and diet, where and when they eat and their physical activity levels all contribute to children's overall health. The focus of this program is to address the epidemic levels of childhood obesity, Type 2 Diabetes and early coronary heart disease in children by helping parents, children and develop better eating habits through healthy, simple, home-prepared meals. The program goal is twofold: to raise awareness of these life threatening issues and to offer workable solutions, via heart-healthy food preparatory/cooking classes, on how to prevent these diseases. Participants will have a chance to sample foods.
So where to start? At home,in the kitchen. By teaching parents and children the skills necessary to facilitate cooking at home, together, we can accomplish several things:
- Develop children’s palates by exposing them to fresh, great-tasting produce, herbs, lean meats and fish.
- Attract children to healthy eating by using flavorful, healthy cooking ingredients, not butter or sugar.
- Educate parents and their children about the importance of increasing daily consumption of fruits and vegetables, proteins and carbohydrates and minimizing the consumption of "empty calories," fats, sugars and artificial ingredients.
- Help children and their parents understand the importance of eating and cooking at home versus eating out or ordering in processed foods several times a week.
- Demonstrate that with just a little time and effort, healthy eating and cooking is not only possible, but also fun.
