I was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2012 and have undergone a double mastectomy and several other surgeries. In February,
I discovered the eight-week support group offered by the
Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program and it was inspiring.
After I attended the support group I decided I wanted to volunteer my own time to the program and help other women. I am one of the 13 women newly trained to be a volunteer with the program.
I am still awaiting my final interview and I will be meeting
with the program’s social workers to determine what capacity I’ll
be volunteering in. I am leaning towards doing community outreach since I have a background in psychology and education. I found the training experience to be life-changing and I feel more empowered.

Dr. Kate Szymanski and Ljiljana Zecevic
from the Derner Institute at Adelphi University.
This study will be examining an experience of
living with cancer. In order to better understand how people
cope with cancer, we are interested in
hearing the voices of cancer survivors.
