Most recently, Dr. Scannell-Desch was tenured professor and chairperson of the Division of Nursing at her alma mater, Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY. Earlier this year, Dr. Scannell-Desch co-wrote a book, Nurses in War: Voices from Iraq and Afghanistan, with her sister, a professor and certified nurse midwife. The pair was motivated by the fact that there is so little written about military nurses in Iraq and Afghanistan. Their research consisted of speaking with dozens of U.S. military nurses about working in Iraq and Afghanistan. The book highlights 37 stories of nurses’ deployment in those war zones from 2003 to 2011.
Dr. Scannell-Desch obtained her B.S. in nursing from Mount Saint Mary College, an MSN as an adult oncology clinical nurse specialist from University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. from Georgia State University in family and community nursing research. She has also received several diplomas while serving in the military from 1972 to 1997. Most recently, Dr. Scannell-Desch obtained a certificate from Rutgers University College of Nursing in post-masters nursing education.
