Elizabeth Rosario
A Special Touch for Special Students
Although interested in the field of education for several years, Elizabeth Rosario credits caring for a daughter with special needs as "the catalyst for pursing a career in special education." A degree candidate in Adelphi’s dual certification program in childhood and special education grades 16, Ms. Rosario was attracted to the Manhattan Center's flexible weekend class schedule and the practicality of the eight week cycles. It didn’t hurt that Adelphi came highly recommended by four family members who happened to be alumni.
In addition to being a full-time mother and student, Ms. Rosario runs Diagnostic Assessment, Inc., a private company that provides professionals to evaluate school age students, focusing specifically on psychiatric, neurological, speech, educational, and social work issues.
"The classes I'm taking at Adelphi allow me to observe another perspective that is often lost in business," said Ms. Rosario, describing how she has been able to view firsthand the intricate processes that take place within a school system and the various issues that may affect children’s academic ability.
Studying for her master's degree has allowed Ms. Rosario to reap benefits in her family life as well.
"The knowledge I have obtained while taking courses has empowered me as a parent to appreciate my daughter's strengths and weaknesses," she said, "to celebrate her as she is and guide her through her educational experience."
After graduation Ms. Rosario plans to teach, and possibly earn an additional master’s degree in supervision. Her ultimate goal is to one day run or open a school of her own.
