Rehanna Ebrahim
Building Bridges, Changing Lives
"Adelphi University's Building Bridges Program afforded me a great opportunity to earn my degree in education," said Rehanna Ebrahim, a graduate student currently enrolled in the Building Bridges Program at Adelphi’s Manhattan Center.
Ms. Ebrahim received a full scholarship to the Building Bridges program, which is offered at Adelphi’s Manhattan Center and funded by a grant from the New York City Department of Education that enables career changers to earn their master's degree in education free of charge. Upon graduation, students are required to teach math or science for a minimum of four years in a New York City public school.
"If I was going to be a teacher, I wanted to serve in the city area," said Ms. Ebrahim. "This program enabled me to earn a higher degree without being under financial pressure."
Ms. Ebrahim, a Bronx resident, graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a minor in chemistry. After receiving her degree at NYU, Ms. Ebrahim planned on attending medical school. Instead, she used her minor in chemistry to teach at the Churchill Schooling Center on Ninth Street in Manhattan.
The head teacher at the Churchill Schooling Center showed Ms. Ebrahim a copy of the New York Times, which contained an advertisement for Adelphi’s Building Bridges Program. In addition to the free tuition, she was attracted by the program’s convenient weekend schedule and accelerated pace.
"The program allowed me to continue working and earn my master’s at the same time," said Ms. Ebrahim. "The flexibility to meet my schedule satisfied my needs. I am able to continue teaching and further my education. I highly recommend this program because it allows students the opportunity to earn their graduate degree, as well as make a difference to the New York City school system."
Please Note: The Building Bridges Program at Adelphi’s Manhattan Center is no longer offered.
