Headlines in nonprofit publications shout doom and gloom:

Huge void as retiring baby boomers leave sector

Dramatic decline in numbers of next generation of leaders

Glaring lack of leaders from under-represented communities

Growing demand for accountability from boards of directors

Reports identify dissatisfaction among current executive directors

The issues are real but so are the opportunities.

The challenge for the nonprofit sector is to capitalize on the leadership crisis and seize the opportunity to re-invigorate organizations, support current executive directors, educate boards of directors, and develop a skilled and enthusiastic pool of new leaders.

With a mission to promote excellence in leadership, The Long Island Center for Nonprofit Leadership welcomes this challenge.

We want good organizations to get better so that they can effectively fulfill their missions: feed the hungry, house the homeless, protect the vulnerable, give kids a better start in life, enrich our cultural world, and ensure a healthy environment.

The Center addresses organizational effectiveness by

  • giving executive directors the support and resources to move their organizations to a new level
  • providing transitioning leaders with thoughtful exit strategies that include clarifying a legacy and ensuring a strong and healthy organization at their departure
  • reaching out to new and emerging leaders with the skills and direction to help them succeed
  • supporting boards of directors with the tools to fulfill their fiduciary and legal responsibilities as well as their visionary and strategic capabilities,
  • readying organizations for the inevitable leadership change and preparing them to embrace these new challenges
  • building a pool of talented and skilled consultants to work with boards of directors.

When nonprofit boards practice good governance and match their passion with competency, when executive directors lead with confidence and have the resources and support needed to succeed, their organizations flourish and Long Island prospers.

It is a privilege and an honor to be a part of helping to make this happen.
