Levermore Global Scholars
Mission Statement

The mission of the Levermore Global Scholars Program represents a spirit of civic engagement and global learning that fosters outstanding leadership talent. As part of the LGS experience, you’ll have a unique opportunity to acquire and expand your:

Global Knowledge through cross-disciplinary learning, participation in UN events, study abroad programs, international internships, and on-campus global activist guest speakers

Civic Awareness through community projects that are integrated with LGS seminars, community internships, volunteer projects, and participation in cultural events

Leadership through global learning and community engagement opportunities that will help you become a force for local and global change.

Levermore Global Scholars Learning Outcomes

Levermore Global Scholars recognize and internalize the importance of social responsibility and justice, civic participation, community engagement, global awareness and global activism, all of which is reflected in scholars’ activities that include:

  • Global learning in the LGS seminars, participation in the United Nations conferences and workshops, attending events with foreign leaders and policy makers, LGS guest speakers’ series;
  • Community action projects integrated into the LGS seminars, independently pursued community internships, group volunteer activities and scholars’ initiatives;
  • Engagement in community service abroad and opportunities for study abroad in more than 120 countries;
  • Participation in the cultural excursions and artistic events in and around New York City.

An LGS Scholar is:

I. An Active and Informed Globalist
  • who is able to demonstrate understanding of major issues, processes and trends of global importance, recognize that different societies and nations hold varied views on the same concerns and better appreciate that we all face varying global challenges despite the global interdependence of cultures, traditions and governance;
  • who has greater readiness and preparedness for shorter and longer stays abroad in order to learn about other cultures, nations and societies;
  • who has a working knowledge of at least one foreign language. 

II. A Compassionate Citizen

  • who has appreciation for and experience in civic participation, volunteering, educating others and helping alleviate problems in a community.

III. A Generalist

  • who is aware of the interconnectedness and the interdependence of various contemporary phenomena, their historical, philosophical, socio-cultural or environmental  underpinnings and is able to demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between and among various academic disciplines in the context of analysis of different domestic and global economic, environmental, social, cultural and political phenomena.

IV. A Thinker, Motivator and Doer

  • who develops the intellectual abilities to come up with ideas for positive social and global change and acquires skills, knowledge and experience of how to implement initiatives and get others involved.

Vision

Levermore Global Scholars Objectives

I. An Active and Informed Globalist
In the LGS seminars, scholars learn, write about, discuss and reflect upon themes of global significance.

LGS Scholars are also encouraged to:
  • go abroad on Adelphi approved programs of shorter and longer duration;
  • attend briefings and conferences at the United Nations;
  • participate in campus and off-campus events with political leaders from other countries;
  • attend sessions with LGS guest speakers who are knowledgeable about other countries, societies and cultures;
  • examine global issues in relation to the experiences of communities in the United States in order to understand their global context.

II. A Compassionate Citizen
In the LGS seminars, scholars get involved in carrying out community projects.

LGS Scholars are also encouraged to:

  • undertake LGS-credited internships;
  • participate in the events offered as part of the LGS cultural program;
  • meet and talk to leaders and activists from the non-profit sector invited to LGS seminars, or as part of the LGS guest speakers’ and documentary series;
  • participate in voluntary activities on and off campus to understand the experiences and struggles of local communities.

III. A Generalist
In the Levermore Global Scholars seminars, scholars form interdisciplinary groups and engage in collaborative interdisciplinary projects that show interconnectedness between students’ majors and minors within a global framework of analysis.

IV. A Thinker, Motivator and Doer
In the LGS seminars, scholars engage in designing and carrying out action projects that develop students’ intellectual potential for ideas and practical solutions, knowledge about implementation strategies and skills for teamwork.

LGS Scholars are also encouraged to:

  • Create and implement their own initiatives to advocate, spread awareness, raise funds and motivate others to get involved behind a civic or/and global cause.
