| Rock It & Wrap It Up (Rock It)

LGS Rock It and Wrap It Up started in Spring of 2007 to donate unserved food to local charities. Molloy’s Hunger Symposium held in Spring of 2007 inspired Matthew Sanfilippo and Brittany Consigili to form the LGS chapter of Rock It and Wrap It Up ("Rock It"). LGS Scholars felt that Rock It would fulfill one of LGS’s goals of community responsibility. I

n the beginning, LGS Scholars looked for on-campus events that would have unserved food left over. They worked with Lackmann to gain access to this food. Students then had to properly package it according to Rock It’s standards, and find a place to donate it, through a process called a "food run."  LGS Rock It has donated food to the Mary Brennen INN, Belmont Racetrack Chaplaincy, and My Brother’s Keeper, all non-profit organizations in the immediate area.

Recently Rock It has expanded, cooperating with the Waldorf School of Garden City and collecting their unserved food on a weekly basis and donating it. As of today, Rock It has successfully collected and donated over 60lbs of food.

With the help of many other LGS Scholars, "Rock It" is now in Stage II, establishing regular donors Off campus. The future goal is to set up Chapters in nearby high schools.

LGS Rock It and Wrap It Up Events:
- Stage I: On Campus Events
- Stage II: Off Campus

Rock it and Wrap it Up was founded in 1990, and developed the concept of 'contractual obligation of leftover food'. With over 150 bands now participating, RWU has gained national recognition feeding over 30,000,000 people since 1990. Today over one hundred High Schools and Universities have established a Chapter around the United States. Donors are protected by the The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan ACT passed by Congress in 1996. The Receivers of Donated food are Shelters, INNs, and Soup Kitchens in and around Garden City.

Stage I: On Campus Events
Stage I of Adelphi's Rock It and Wrap It Up Program is coordinating with On-campus donors. After selecting events which would have extra unserved food left over, an ARW representatives contact the organizations running them to set up a ARW sponsored food run.

This is the procedure used to coordinate with on-campus donors.

  1. Select an Event which might be able to donate food, like a diner or club meeting.
  2. Call the event's coordinator to discuss how you want to involve them in ARW.
  3. At the Meeting be sure to explain:
    • ARW's Goal.
    • How they are protected by The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Law.
    • What food is eligible and how it is handled.
    • Who Receives their food.
    • How ARW operates a food run.
  4. Schedule what time ARW Staff can go to the even and pick up the food.

Next, contact the director of the Soup Kitchen or Shelter you want to deliver the food to. Make sure to discuss:

  • What ARW is.
  • The amount and type of food you can deliver.
  • What time ARW Staff can deliver it.

Sometimes the event runs too late or there are not enough ARW Staff are availble to deliver the food, so it may be stored in the LGS refrigerator in Science Room 103.

ARW Staff consist of LGS Volunteers who live both on and off campus. All are full time students at Adelphi, so it is important to coordinate food pickups and drop-offs around every schedule. When ARW Staff pick up the food, they must inspect the food to make sure it meets ARW/RWU requirements. Proper materials must also be used when handling the food. AWR Staff also go in pairs or greater when transporting food.

Adelphi's Rock It and Wrap It Up (ARW) started in Spring of 2007 when the Levermore Global Scholars sent Matthew and Brittany to Molloy's Hunger Symposium. With the help of many other LGS students, ARW is now in Stage II, establishing regular donors Off campus.

Stage II: Off Campus
Stage II of Adelphi's Rock It and Wrap It Up Program is establishing Off campus donors. After selecting organizations which would be able to supple food, ARW representatives visit them and meet with their managers in hope of setting up a regular service.

This is the procedure used to create off campuss donors.

  1. Select an Organization which might be able to donate food, like a private school or pizza place.
  2. Call and set up an appointment with them to speak with a manager or administrator.
  3. At the Meeting be sure to explain:
    • ARW's Goal.
    • How they are protected by The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Law.
    • What food is eligible and how it is handled.
    • Who Receives their food.
    • How ARW operates a food run.
  4. Schedule a trial run.

If the Trial run is successful, meet again and create a system for continuous donations and runs.
