News 12 Long Island

As a communications major, I find the world of news fascinating. Therefore, my internship at News 12 Long Island was a perfect fit. I never realized how much hard work goes into the preparation of news stories until I experienced it first hand. You never know what to expect. One day you could be doing research, the next, you could be meeting a soap opera star. Even still, you could find yourself running down the side of a parkway (in heels!) at a crime scene, where a dead body was just found in a suitcase. Many of my days consisted of interacting with reporters, anchors, photographers and editors. I had the opportunity to work with very talented professionals, each willing to share their time and expertise. In addition, I was often asked to conduct research and log tapes. One of the segments I had the opportunity to work on was about how to be more environmentally friendly. I never realized there are so many different ways to 'go green.' Overall, my experience at News 12 Long Island was both worthwhile and memorable.

LGS Community Internship with Staten Island Mental Health Society, Inc.

I am a psychology major; biology minor. After doing a general Google search regarding internships in the science/mental health fields, I felt this would be an experience of a lifetime. Since the age of 15, I’ve worked with children in settings such as hospitals, day camps, tutoring programs, etc. But this was particular, I would instead be working alongside qualified therapists in diagnosing and implementing an evidence-based summer therapeutic program for children diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), and ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder). The Summer Therapeutic Program (STP) was developed by William E. Pelham Hr Jr. at Florida State University. It has three broad functions: treatment, research, and training. It currently runs in 15 states and SIMHS is one. We as counselors get assigned a certain age group to target; I have boys and girls ages 5. The program involves a lot of mental and physical commitment. We implement a point system contingent on the child’s behavior, positive reinforcement, appropriate commands, sports skills, academic learning, and much more. This program is admirable because bringing sunshine into a child’s life generates a feeling from within that is indescribable.

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

Rebecca has written a blog entry as part of a 21st-century lesbian’s history project that was published in the Task Force weekly e-newsletter with 30,000 readers. View the article.

As a passionate human rights activist, a lesbian, and a transgender individual I was drawn to the undertakings of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. This grassroots organization strives for the rights and equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, while simultaneously recognizing the multitude of diversity that exists within the LGBT community in regards to race, ethnicity, culture, faith, different ability, and citizenship status.
