I am a psychology major, and after reading about this internship, I felt it would be a great experience in the human services field. I am working with the Leadership Training Institute (LTI) which is based in Hempstead on Long Island. The program is LTI’s after school mentor program. The program involves the visitation to local schools to be paired with a 4th-8th grade student and meeting with them once a week. During that time I provide a listening ear, as well as help with homework, advice, guidance and a positive outlook. After each school visit, a session report is required for records. The report includes anything we did during our meeting with our student, as well as any challenges we faced, or any progress that seems to be occurring. There are also times when we can brainstorm with other mentors for activities or ways to get the child stimulated and excited about the program. I am also invited to attend meetings and workshops that LTI provides for their staff and volunteers.

LGS Community Internship with Ludlum Elementary School

As an education major, I thought the Ludlum Elementary School internship would be an awesome experience for me. After creating a bullying and violence workshop for 1-5th graders with the Children, Peace and Violence class in the fall of 2007, I decided to continue the program with first graders through the spring. With four first grade classes at the Ludlum Elementary School in Hempstead, twice a week I work with each class covering a variety of topics regarding bullying and violence. The workshop is designed to educate the students on their level about what bullying is, behaviors, safety and respect. The program covers everything including the different types of bullying, the characteristics of bullies, the feelings of the people involved in bullying and violence and the roles they play. Furthermore, the program also includes looking at different types of behavior, what types are respectful and accepted and those that are not, the importance of safety, and much more. The activities, which range from worksheets, read aloud’s, skits, picture scenes, class conversations and arts & crafts, all coincide with the theme of the class for that month or week, whether it be phonetics or identifying characteristics. Therefore, not only are the students learning about bullying and violence, they are working on the skills their classroom teacher has taught them that week. Working at Ludlum, I have the opportunity to work alongside the classroom teacher to create lesson plans, plus I am able to hear their input about the ones I have already created. In addition, I am able to work with the students, carrying out the lesson plan I have crafted. Working with the students is such a great experience because not only am I teaching them about bullying and violence, I am also giving them someone they can feel comfortable with to talk to about the topics we are discussing by forming trustworthy relationships with them. Aside from working with the first graders, which is very exciting and rewarding, I am also invited to attend the grade level meetings that take place once every two weeks, to discuss the progress of the students as well as any comments or concerns I may have. The program is excellent, and the students and teachers are very appreciative that we have chosen them to share it with.

LGS Community Internship with Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that works to find solutions with the housing problem by building low costing homes for families throughout the world. I received an excellent opportunity to work for Habitat for Humanity of Nassau County, where the 11th house is being built in Roosevelt, NY. This house also happens to be a green house, meaning that not only is it cost efficient to the family but also very environmentally friendly. My tasks consist of various things for example reaching out to high schools to involve them in the green building, attending conferences, e.g. the Pay-it-Forward Conference that took place in Westbury, and creating and delivered multi-media presentation at the conference. Working for Habitat for Humanity is a unique experience because it provides me with a chance to see what solutions are being created in order to address the issue of affordable housing on Long Island. I have an opportunity to witness volunteers all working together building this house, whether they have experience or not. Also it gives me a chance to gain knowledge about certain things that I thought I would never know about for example construction techniques and green house building.

Being finance major, Island Harvest gave me the opportunity to be able to take some accounting experience and have some community service experience. Island Harvest is an organization that acts as a middle man, trying to bridge the gap between those who have food and who need it. I am interning under the director of finance, which gives me the opportunity to look at the problem of hunger form the financial aspect. Every year Island Harvest has to start form scratch and collect finances for its operations. I was lucky enough to start my internship in the month of January so to be able to personally experience this challenge. Often I get the opportunity of contacting the agencies and helping Island Harvest arrange food drives. I am also involved in arranging the events Island Harvest has in schools specifically. Finally, my internship allows me to gain knowledge about the issue of hunger on Long Island, the causes for its persistence and challenges with eradicating it.

LGS Community Internship with Life with Literacy

Life With Literacy (LWL) is a small non-profit organization founded in 2004 that supports lifelong learning, civic participation and strong communities by providing introductory English programs including ESL life skills and computer literacy education. Despite the organization’s small staff, LWL has been able to achieve many of its goals, among which is teaching a computer literacy program. LWL has donated about twenty computers and currently teaches a class at the Belmont Racetrack, Elmont, NY.
LWL needed their collected computers refurbished. They also needed the software on working computers purged of viruses. I collected used computers and with LWL collected computers pieced together working ones, building many from scratch. I then install needed software like Microsoft Office, virus protection software, and sometimes an operating system like Windows XP 2002. Tuesday night’s LWL meets at the Belmont Racetrack and teach a class on the basics of computers. Most attendees are Spanish speaking, lower educated, semi-literate Belmont staff members, between the ages 20-35. I took Spanish in High School, and spoke it when I worked at McDonalds, so am able to help during the bi-lingual. I assist in these classes, sometimes running them with the translator. I also write user-friendly computer manuals explaining simple tasks to be giving out as a package upon the completion of the class.

LGS Community Internship with Leadership Training Institute

I am interning for the Leadership Training Institute. I am double majoring in political science and sociology and believe that this program is useful and helpful in enriching my studies. I am currently doing research to help find events and different activities for students between the ages of 12-17. This research involves locating events that are age appropriate and also dealing with specific theme months. For example, during Black History Month we try and find events that match this theme and cater to events dealing with the issue. There are about twenty students. These students live at a group home which is also known as a non-secure detention center. The students have all been sent by the state to this group home. They may have encountered some trouble in schooling, such as truancy, or parents feel they can no longer control their behavior. Often, the courts remand them to this facility. We will be visiting the students in the near future, and hope to put on a program for them on how to deal with stress. This is a great opportunity to see a different side of society and how it works. This will give me insight to issues that deal with sociology and political science.

LGS Community Internship with Geoffrey Weill Associates

For this spring 2008, I am interning at Geoffrey Weill Associates. It is a travel and tourism public relations firm, which handles all media relations for companies in the travel industry. Our clients are luxury hotels, airline companies, and a travel medical insurance company. Geoffrey Weill Associates is a for- profit company so the nature of my internship is a bit different and difficult as well. A day at the Geoffrey Weill Associates office consists of a lot of emailing, mailing, and calling. We are in constant with individuals of the press, mainly journalist at important publications like Travel + Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler. Public Relations is just about keeping good connections with these magazines and journalist so they can go back and shine light on the clients.
Our big project these past few months has been on our first client, Conservation Corporation Africa (CC Africa). They are expanding and hosting a summit where they will bring together many people from the travel and sustainability industry. The question that is being asked is, "Can Luxury Travel be Responsible Travel." It is actually a relatively new concern now that everybody is concerned with being green. The reality is that there are no real answers. Unlike global warming, which obviously is wrong and has clear solutions on how we can take little steps to fix it, the travel industry does not have any solutions because it is still stuck in defining what luxury is and how we got here to begin with. In other words they are still identifying the problem making it hard to create solutions. The field does not have any experts on the topic. Currently magazines have hired individuals to specialize on these topics and address them. Magazines in the travel industry are going a bit greener. At the summit there will be a panel discussion where the question will be posted and people will have a dialogue on the issue. It's very hard that solutions will actually be created but the point is to get people to talk.

LGS Community Internship with Optimum Capital Management.

The motto of my internship with All About Business (AAB) is "Start your tomorrow today." It is a philosophy that has kept me motivated and given me a sense of adventure ever since I was a mere junior in high school. All About Business is a non-profit organization under the mentorship of Ryan Mack of Optimum Capital Management. Over the past 3 years, AAB has flourished into a non-for-profit organization whose members conduct financial literacy workshops throughout many low-income communities on the east coast to educate and empower adults and especially youths to become financially responsible. We, the members of All About Business, sincerely believe empowered youths of today will grow to be the responsible adults who will meet the challenges of global independence tomorrow.
Being a political science major, AAB has enabled me to look at the world of politics from an economic perspective. It is needless to say that money makes the world go around; without money, there is no politics. Nonetheless, my responsibilities as an intern in AAB are to conduct seminars, write weekly articles (including research for a book currently being written), and attend community events. I serve as a liaison between the business world and youths in not only underprivileged communities but all communities. It is that kind of grass root financial awareness campaigns that will cause Americans of all ages and backgrounds to pitch in helping America get back on its feet. All About Business' financial awareness will result in less underfunded retirement plans, less consumer debt, less consumption, and an increased financial independence.

LGS Community Internship with Central Synagogue of Nassau County

Central Synagogue requested help from LGS in building a multi-media website for its members. The old website was too dull and unattractive. As an intern I was supposed to be helping in the process of building and maintaining the website. Although graphics and text were to be provided, the layout and different automatic schedules were to be added. I meet twice a week with my mentor and receive my assignments for the rest of the week. My general mission was to make the site self maintaining with automatic updates and scrollers. The website, which is not ready as of yet, was to include general information about all the programs and services offered by the synagogue as well as contact and history information. For social interaction, the website is supposed to have message boards, email accounts and calendars of events that are to take place in the synagogue in the near future.
