For the Fall 2008 semester I will be interning with Planned Parenthood of Nassau County in their Public Affairs department. Through my activities with my internship I intend to learn about and help to change the stigma associated with Planned Parenthood as well as disseminate information and educational services to the community.

Some of the questions I hope to explore this semester are: how do we continue to interest the community in pro-women and pro-family activities and information? How can we make people aware that Planned Parenthood does not just offer abortion services? With the presidential election looming, how can we interest people in the politics that govern their country? How can we register and encourage more people in the community to vote?

These questions will be explored through the planning of events with and in the community as well as within the Adelphi community. These can include performances, educators, and live testimonials from individuals who have dealt with the specific topic of discussion first hand. I also will be working on small community outreach projects such as: phone-banking, working informational tables at events, and canvassing.

As a Computers and Management Information System Major who is always interested in community service, I was extremely elated to be able to create a credited internship that blended both the needs of my academic requirements with my strive for increased community involvement.  My internship is in cooperation with the Leadership Training Institute, and the Life With Literacy, two non-profit organizations that are physically active in the surrounding communities of Adelphi.

The Leadership Training Institute (LIT) is a very large non-profit educational research and operation organization based in Hempstead, New York. The Institute's many projects, programs and initiatives derive from and are a result of collective and cohesive efforts put forth by its members to meet the community needs of minority children and families, the at-risk, and those in crisis (source: LTI website).

Retensa, Marketing Internship

While interning in a marketing department at Retensa, the leader in Talent Management and Research Company, I have the opportunity to explore up-close the fascinating fields of marketing, researching, and business. While concentrating on leadership opportunities in business, I decided to dedicate my time and investigate the availability of leadership advancement for women. There are exciting things happening inside the world of women entrepreneurs. Women are now the dominant force in small business ownership, and succeeding in industries that were once taboo for women; however these women are still a minority comparing to the male dominated business world.

Few of my questions that I want to find answers to are during my internship: Why are there so few female leaders in the business world? What are the obstacles for their advancement? What are the key personal characteristics needed to advance to a higher position in business? The underlining issue for all of these questions is an inquiry about the factors that contribute to the inequality between women and men in the business world.

During my time with Retensa, I will be working on several projects concerning direct and indirect interaction with women in various positions and areas of expertise. My responsibilities will include: interviewing, collecting data, setting up events, preparing presentations, assessing evaluations/surveys, comparing results with the available data. All of that will be crucial for my research about the situation and role of women in the business sector.
