About the Speaker
Damai has been active as a student and women rights advocate since her student years in the 1980s during Suharto’s regime. She is the co-founder of several women’s organizations on a local and national level in (SPACE ) Indonesia including RUMPUN, Indonesian Women Coalition for Justice and Democracy and Kapal Perempuan. Besides being an activist, she has worked as a gender specialist and consultant for NGOs on issues around child protection, child labor, monitoring and evaluation, human rights and basic and alternative education. Damai has also been active in human rights movements on behalf of Timor Leste, Aceh, Papua and political prisoners. From 2000 through 2002 Damai was the chairperson of RUMPUN. The organization works to support female domestic workers and their children. It has two sister organizations  -- Rumpun Tjoet Nyak Dien (RTND) in Yogyakarta and Rumpun Gema Perempuan (RGP) in Jakarta – both of them focusing on the rights of domestic and migrant workers in Indonesia. Their activities include organizing, advocacy, public policy, campaign, alternative education and case handling. Damai is currently an international guest of the International Center for Tolerance Education, An Initiative of the Third Millennium Foundation.
