About Iman Aoun
Ms. Iman Aoun is the Artistic Director and co-founder of ASHTAR Theater – a non-profit organization that was established in 1991 in Jerusalem. A local Palestinian Theatre, ASHTAR has a truly progressive global perspective – to promote creativity and commitment for change through a novel combination of training and acting programs as well as through professional theatre performances. If marginalized audiences are unable to come to ASHTAR’s main location in Ramallah, ASHTAR moves its stage to these often remote areas to include everyone.
Ms. Aoun is in New York to bring “The Gaza Monologues” to the United Nations on November 29th. "The Gaza Monologues" was created after ASHTAR Theater started implementing drama therapy and creative writing training for youth in Gaza that have lived through the Israeli attack on the Gaza strip in December 2008-January 2009. The youth's individual experiences, their dreams, fears and hopes are voiced through this production.
Ms. Aoun has also worked untiringly in the field of promoting Palestinian art abroad. She is the Palestinian representative to the International Institute of Theatre of the Mediterranean (IITM) and initiator of the 100 Artists to Palestine programme, which is executed in coordination with the Informal European Theatre Meeting (IETM) and the Palestinian Art Centres Network, both of which she is also a member.
