Dominican Republic
March 13-20, 2011
Would you like to travel abroad to volunteer your time in the community you are visiting and receive academic credit for your work, as well? If so, The LGS Spring Break Community Service Trip to the Dominican Republic might be for you!
The Levermore Global Scholars Program is collaborating with the Orphanage Outreach, a non-profit organization with extensive experience in offering various community-based and service-oriented short and long-term programs in the Dominican Republic to help orphaned, abandoned, and disadvantaged children. Students will have to register for a one-credit “Exploring the Dominican Republic” course in Spring 2011 to participate in the program.

Volunteers will work in the town of Monte Cristi. The Orphanage Outreach will offer orientation, provide on-site supervision, and arrange educational and cultural activities in which our students will be involved. Students will be serving both the orphanage where they will be sleeping and eating, as well as the local community. Much of the time will be spent teaching the orphanage children and/or teaching English in local schools. Upon students' arrival in the Dominican Republic, they will be given a full orientation about how to best prepare for their experience teaching in the classroom. The Orphanage Outreach will allocate time for groups to meet, reflect on their experience, and actively plan for the next projects/initiatives to work on with the children. Please see attached for a sample itinerary and visit the Orphanage Outreach at http://www.orphanage-outreach.org/home/

From March 13 to March 20, 2011 a group of Adelphi volunteers, consisting of nine students, Assistant Director of LGS Yana Kusayeva, and Dr. Jean DeMarzo, traveled to the Dominican Republic to engage in community service. Volunteers traveled to the town of Monte Cristi and worked with the Orphanage Outreach to assist orphaned, abandoned, and disadvantaged children. As part of this program, the group taught public health and English in local schools.
Students reflected on their service-learning experience in the journals, excerpts of which can be found here: Reflections (PDF 13KB)
