Habitat for Humanity Nassau County
About the Organization:
HFHNC builds new housing for low income families. These houses are built using volunteer labor and discounted materials. The completed homes are then sold to the family at cost. Families are required to put in 300 hours of work into building the home. HFHNC finances the homes at 0% interest, making the homes affordable for someone who would otherwise be unable to afford them.
Intern Position:
Assistant to the Project Manager.
Intern Responsibilities:
The responsibilities of this position are fluid and tend to change as we reach different points in each project. Including researching green and energy efficient systems at the start of the project, coordinating volunteer groups and tradesmen during the build, and expediting permits and paperwork toward the end of the project.
The intern will absolutely need to be self - motivated and able to utilize their time wisely. Candidates should have very strong phone and communication skills and be skilled at using the internet for research. A basic knowledge of environmental conservation would be helpful, but is not required.
Most of the work can probably be done from their home (or anywhere with a phone and internet access). However, access to an automobile would probably be required. Many of the relationships we build require face-to-face meetings, so the ability to occasionally visit the site or industry people would require use of a vehicle.
This position will not include soliciting donations or fundraising. Also, an intern will not be expected to do any of the building or manual labor. (they are welcome to if they like). It is an "out of office" position without office hours. The candidate will report directly to the Project manager and assist in day-to-day function of our current home build. This is a VERY low pressure situation which requires an interested and motivated individual.
