JOIN LGS IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC during the 2010 Spring break!!!

The LGS Alternative Spring Break in the Dominican Republic (March 14-20) will be set up as a collaborative undertaking with the Orphanage Outreach (www.orphanage-outreach.org) that has extensive experience in offering various community-based and service-oriented short and long term programs in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, to help orphaned, abandoned, and disadvantaged children. The Orphanage Outreach will offer orientation, provide on-site supervision, and arrange educational and cultural activities in which our students will be involved.

Students will be serving both the orphanage where they will be sleeping and eating, as well as the local community. Much of the time will be spent teaching the orphanage children and/or teaching English in local schools. Upon students' arrival in the Dominican Republic, they will be given a full orientation about how to best prepare for their experience teaching in the classroom. The Orphanage Outreach will allocate time for groups to meet, reflect on their experience, and actively plan for the next projects/initiatives to work on with the children.

A typical volunteer week with Orphanage Outreach in Monte Cristi consists of the following:

Saturday: Traveling to the orphanage
Sunday: Orientation and preparation day
Monday-Thursday: work days
Friday: Volunteer field trip to see some of the country.
Saturday: Volunteers travel home.

Academic Aspect
In order to enhance the learning experience students interested in the Dominican Republic trip will be required to register for a 1-credit LGS Special Topics seminar: Exploring Dominican Republic offered in Spring 10. The aim of the seminar will be to introduce students to history, and current political, economic, social and cultural situation of the Dominican Republic. The seminar meetings scheduled after the trip will offer the students an opportunity to reflect upon and evaluate their service learning experience in the Dominican Republic.

Financial Aspect
The program will run 7 days (Saturday, March 13 until Saturday, March 20). The total cost per student should not exceed $1,150 (including housing, meals and airfare). The Orphanage Outreach fee for the program will be $500 per student provided that at least 10 students participate and make a deposit by the end of December.
