February 26, 2009
The United Nations Department of Public Information held a Communications Workshops for NGOs on February 26, 2009. The Communications workshop was an excellent experience for me! Since I am majoring in communications, the workshop was beneficial to me because it helped me to develop and improve my communications skills. United Nations Briefing on Diabetes
November 18, 2008
On Thursday, November 18th, I went to the United Nations for a briefing on World Diabetes Day. This was only the second annual briefing on this topic and primarily focused on diabetes in children and adolescents. This annual event came about partially as a result of the International Diabetes Federation’s Unite for Diabetes campaign. The IDF, along with the World Health Organization, created World Diabetes Day in 1991, in response to the growing global pandemic. It was on December 20th, 2006, that the UN passed Resolution 61/255 which officially marked World Diabetes Day as a United Nations world day to be observed each year. November 18th was chosen specifically because it is the birth date of Frederick Banting who, along with Charles Best, discovered insulin in 1921. More information...

Seventy years ago in Germany...
November 9-10, 2008
Seventy years ago on November 9th and 10th, Germany’s Jews watched in horror as the society around them descended into savagery. It was Kristallnacht, a night when Germans destroyed and looted Jewish owned stores and synagogues. At this point, there was already an atmosphere of racial tension. The assassination of a German diplomat to France by a Jew was the final straw. From this night on, things would only get worse. One could only imagine what it must have felt like to watch helplessly as the world that you had previously felt so safe turned against you for simply being of a different race. More information...

Four experts in their respective fields were there to present their opinions and findings. We sat amongst a diverse crowd filled with representatives from various non-profit organizations, all of us eager to listen and learn how they can become involved in the project. More information...

Levermore Global Scholars Vivian Fridas and Molly Ross attended the UU briefing on the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Panelists reviewed the progress made and the impact of the Declaration on people around the world. Despite the passage of time the contents of the Declaration is still largely actual today. The Declaration however needs to be improved to include new guarantees for the protection of rights of other groups (e.g. elderly or illiterate) in order to be an effective force for change.
