Levermore Scholars at the United Nations |
Human Rights' Day
On December 6, 2007, Levermore Global Scholars Vivian Fridas and Molly Ross attended a United Nations briefing on the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Panelists reviewed the progress made with this document and suggested improvements. The panelists then answered questions from members of the audience. The students found this question and answer session to be the most intriguing portion.
The students learned of some improvements that can be made to remedy some problems, such as not including the rights of the elderly and illiterate. In the Universal Declaration of Human Rights document, these individuals are not currently considered. The students were impressed by how very difficult it is for the United Nations to uphold these rights for everyone due to the fact that the United Nations cannot interfere with a state’s recognized sovereignty. This makes enforcing violations of human rights extremely difficult.
Later this year the United Nations will hold a convention celebrating the anniversary. One of the panelists said that although it is a time for celebration on the agreement and signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we should not forget that its promise is yet to be fulfilled. All people should have their basic rights protected from their governments, and the United Nations cannot falter in fulfilling this promising to the best of their ability.
