The International Initiatives Committee (IIC) builds on Adelphi's long tradition of international interest and service. In 2003 the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations of the Department of Public Information (DPI) of the United Nations approved Adelphi as a non-governmental organization (NGO), in recognition of the University's commitment to bringing "global awareness of international issues and the United Nations to the university community and the public."
Adelphi joined more than 1,500 not-for-profit organizations world-wide working with the United Nations to raise awareness of pressing global issues.

National Model United Nations Collegiate Conference
Since 2003, Adelphi students have participated in the annual National Model United Nations Collegiate Conference (http://www.nmun.org/), as part of the National Model United Nations (NMUN) course offered by the department of political science. They join more than 3000 students from 40 countries in an intensive, five-day simulation of United Nations operations.
The five-day program complements the course's rigorous examination of global governance, including the evolution of the UN system, its organization and structure, and its policies in the areas of peace and security, economic development, and human rights.
Participation in NMUN allows students to apply their academic studies to a realistic simulation of negotiations across a broad spectrum of UN activities. From this intercultural perspective, students gain an intellectual understanding of global governance as well as getting hands-on experience in multilateral diplomacy. NMUN also organizes speaker's series with eminent scholars and UN representatives.
- 2003 represented Lithuania and sent 12 students
- 2004 represented the Kingdom of Bhutan and sent 12 students
- 2005 represented Belgium and sent 15 students

National DPI/NGO BRIEFINGS and Annual Conference
Due to Adelphi's NGO status, Adelphi students and faculty are invited to attend the weekly briefings at the United Nations (http://www.un.org/dpi/ngosection/). For security reasons, faculty and students must confirm their attendance in advance by contacting:
