Masters of Arts in Mental Health Counseling

The Master of Arts in mental health counseling prepares students to be skilled, knowledgeable, and ethical mental health counseling professionals providing services to individuals, groups, and families in a variety of settings. Graduates will demonstrate:
  • competency in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders
  • an understanding and respect for human diversity
  • strong communication skills
  • an ability to facilitate client growth, development, and coping skills
  • a respect for the ethics and standards of practice endorsed by the mental health counseling profession.

The Master of Arts in mental health counseling is a full-time, 60-credit program that includes

  • 14 required courses (42 credits, including a 3-credit practicum totaling 100 hours)
  • one 6-credit internships (totaling 900 hours)
  • four elective courses (12 credits).
This program has been approved by New York State as licensure eligible, and it is also designed to meet the requirements for accreditation from the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP).
