John J. Phelan, Jr., '70 '87 (Hon) is the former Chairman and C.E.O. of the New York Stock Exchange and Past President of the International Federation of Stock Exchanges. He has served on the Boards of Merrill Lynch, Met Life, Eastman Kodak, Sonat and Avon Products. He was the Chairman of President Reagan’s Private Sector Initiative Board from 1986 to 1989 and is past President of the International Federation of Stock Exchanges located in Paris. Mr. Phelan is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York and a member of the Archdiocese Finance Committee.
He is a graduate of Adelphi with a BBA, magna cum laude, and was the first alumni Chairman of the Adelphi Board. He is also an Emeritus Trustee of Tulane University and a former Trustee of New York Medical College and Life Trustee of Hospital for Special Surgery. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1951 to 1954 including a year in combat (summer 1951-summer 1952). Mr. Phelan is the recipient of the Major General John H. Russell Leadership Award from the Marine Corps Foundation.
In 1986 Mr. Phelan took 25 experts to China to help open the Shanghai Stock Exchange and in 1990 he did the same thing in Moscow by helping the Russians establish the first Stock Exchange since the Revolution.
His service on charitable boards has included: Chairman, Aspen Institute; Hospital for Special Surgery; Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories; Asia Society; Director, New York State Business Council; AICPA; Securities Industries Association; the Conference Board; Economic Club of New York; and Council on Foreign Relations. He has also served on numerous advisory committees on the Federal, State and local governmental levels.
Mr. Phelan’s awards and honors are too numerous to list. Among them are: The Corning Award, New York State Business Council; Adelphi University’s President’s Medal for Integrity in American Leadership and Distinguished Alumni Award; New York University, Stern School of Business, C. Walter Nicholas Award; The Wharton School, Entrepreneur Award; American Jewish Congress, Stephen S. Wise Award; B’nai B’rith, Wall Street Man of the Year Award. Also, the Commune of Milan’s Silver Ambrosiana; the City of Venice, Lion of Venice Award and the Veneto Region Medal of Veneto; and The Republic of France, Chevalier De L’Ordre Des Arts et Des Letters.
Mr. Phelan has been granted Honorary Doctor of Laws Degrees from Fairfield University, Tulane University, Adelphi University, Notre Dame University, Niagara University, and Hamilton College and Honorary Doctor of Engineering Degree from Polytechnic University.
Part of the citation in the Corning Award from the Business Council of New York State reads, “As chairman of the New York Stock Exchange, John Phelan, Jr. represented equity in a time of debt, prudence in a period of recklessness, ethics in an age of easy virtue.”
